Daryl Hall Scholarship Criteria

Scholarship assistance is paid to recipients in one installment.  Re-application to the Daryl Hall Scholarship is required for fall or spring semesters. The Scholarship Committee will use the following criteria in the selection of scholarship recipients:

  • Preference shall be given to those recipients pursuing a 2-year college degree program.
  • Preference may be given to degree programs or technical courses in fields directly relative to water and wastewater treatment.
  • Preference shall be given to those that maintain a high grade point average.
  • Preference may be given to those recipients who have demonstrated special accomplishments or achievements.
  • Preference may be given to those recipients who have demonstrated active participation in community service activities.

Scholarship Background and Purpose

The Daryl Hall Family Fund was started in the spring of 2003 to help support a great friend and co-worker, Daryl Hall, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December of 2002 and courageously battled one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). Unfortunately, Daryl’s cancer proved to be terminal and he passed away in August of 2003. The family fund was originally established to support Daryl, his wife Lynn, and his two young children, Jared and Stephanie, while Daryl fought through his illness. One of his biggest concerns was that his children would not have the finances to attend college. The fund was established to keep a promise to him made by many of his close friends. It was their goal to set aside enough financial resources that his children would not have to worry about funding for college.

Daryl was truly a one-of-a-kind individual, serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Charles F. Adams from 1985 to 1989. After the military, he began his civilian career with the Trinity River Authority’s Central Regional Wastewater System (CRWS) in 1991, starting as a seasonal employee and quickly working his way up to Maintenance Supervisor. He was involved in numerous facility expansions and improvements, and earned a reputation as a person who always got the job done! In 2001, Daryl left the Authority to join C F Engineered Equipment as a Service Representative responsible for establishing service contracts, performing equipment start up, and repairing rotating equipment for water and wastewater facilities throughout Texas.

Daryl was a member of the Texas Water Utility Association (TWUA) and Water Environment Association of Texas (WEAT), where he volunteered in multiple capacities including the Operations Challenge Program.

Daryl was the greatest of friends and the one person you could count on if you were in need. He was a loving father and husband who truly adored his family. Daryl could be found on the baseball field coaching his son or watching his daughter at her dance recitals. He was an avid outdoorsman who spent all of his spare time fishing or hunting with his family. It was said at his wake, “To know Daryl was to love him, and if you didn’t, then it was just a testament to your own low moral character.”

The original promise to fund Jared and Stephanie’s college education was successfully met in 2015 thanks to the ongoing support from the North Texas water and wastewater community. On May 11, 2018, Jared graduated from Tarleton State University (TSU) with his master’s degree, and Stephanie graduated from TSU with her bachelor’s degree.  Both were honored as Outstanding Graduates in their respective degrees.

In keeping with Daryl’s desire to give back to our industry and help others, the Daryl Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to extend financial assistance to employees of North Texas utilities and their children to provide technical training and financial assistance for continued education. The scholarship fund is managed by the WEAT North Texas Section with the support of the Hall-Alley family. Lynn Hall-Alley donates 10% of the revenue from the Daryl Hall Memorial Golf Tournament (MGT) to non-profit organizations that have been near and dear to Daryl and his family’s heart. The remaining revenue from the Daryl Hall MGT goes to the scholarship fund. This is an opportunity to continue Daryl’s legacy in giving back to our industry and to help others seeking higher education.
